SELECTED TANKA FOR THE LAST HALF OF 2015 DECIDED !

JAPANESE  TANKA

Three tanka chosen from those submitted in the last half of 2015 (July to December), translated into English by Amelia Fielden

岩尾淳子(Jyunko Iwao)

しずけさを移せるように白鷺はそう遠くない田に降りたちぬ
(shuizukesa wo utuseru youni sirasagi wa sou tookunai tani oritachinu)

as if shifting aside
the stillness, a white heron
began to drop
down onto a field
in the middle distance

***

東野登美子(Tomiko Higashino)

チチと鳴き進まぬ時の針はいつも0時五分か十二時五分
(chichi to naki susumanu tokino hari wa itumo reiji gofun ka jyuuniji gofun)

the clock tick-ticks
though its hands stay still
always
at five past midnight
or five past twelve

***

Naoko Lamb(直子・ラム)

日本ならおせちの準備するはずの時間を我は読書に耽る
(nihonnara osechi no jyunbi suru hazu no jikan o ware wa dokusho ni fukeru)

were this Japan
I’d expect to spend these hours
preparing New Year foods,
but here I’m absorbed
in reading a book
